I wish I learned this sooner... Because luxury fashion goes beyond aesthetics and craftsmanship; it's about fostering mindful consumption and ethical practices. So here are five practical tips to help you make more sustainable and informed choices in your luxury fashion journey🦜
1. Invest in Versatile Pieces
Opt for versatile clothing that can be styled in multiple ways, suitable for various occasions. A well-designed luxury piece should effortlessly transition from day to night, or from casual to formal settings.
My Tip: to start building a versatile wardrobe, incorporate accessories like our MŌS bandanas and scarves. These pieces are my top recommendation for anyone looking to add versatility to their closet. They allow you to experiment and play around with different styles using just one element. You can wear them as a headscarf, tie them around your neck, or even use them as a belt. This kind of versatility is key to making the most out of your wardrobe.
2. Consider the Origin and Production of Your Clothes
Working in this industry, I've learned that the exploitation of human and environmental resources is a significant issue. I believe luxury fashion should embody ethical craftsmanship. For example, at MŌS, we ensure that our products are made by skilled tailors, seamstresses, and artisans across three different continents. We know every single person involved in our manufacturing process, and it is a priority for us to ensure that our team, collaborators, and partners care about the origin and production of our clothes as much as we do.
My tip: Look for brands that are transparent about where and how their garments are made. Support labels that produce locally or in regions known for their artisanal expertise. It's impossible for me not to think about the people behind each piece of clothing. The more you know about the brand you are buying from, and where and how your items are produced, the better.
3. Choose Timeless Colors and Classic Styles
While trends come and go, classic colors and styles remain elegant and relevant. People often ask me how big my closet is, expecting it to be enormous. The reality is that I now know the colors and styles that are essential for me and work well with my petite frame, ever-changing personality, and lifestyle. You can also learn more about what suits you best by booking a style discovery consultation with us. Understanding your essentials helps you build a timeless and efficient wardrobe.
My tip: Invest in pieces with timeless appeal such as neutral tones (black, white, beige, navy) and classic silhouettes (A-line dresses, tailored blazers). these will be the forever wardrobe pieces that will complement the one-of-a-kind and the statement pieces on your closet.
4. Prioritize Ethical and Sustainable Materials
In luxury fashion, the quality of materials is paramount... and here, I have a confession to make, I used to buy from trendy fast fashion marketplaces, clothes that "looked decent." What I learned over time is that this approach only leads to a closet full of items that you will never wear, "don't look like the picture, or will fall apart after the first wash. My tip: Opt for items made from sustainably sourced and ethically produced fabrics. This includes organic cotton, ethically sourced silk, cashmere, and responsibly harvested wool. Additionally, seek out innovations in sustainable fabrics, such as Tencel or recycled fibers.
5. Care for Your Luxury Garments Properly
Luxury pieces require special care to maintain their pristine condition. Always follow the care instructions provided by the brand. For instance, I keep my blazers and all MŌS suits in garment bags to preserve them for years. My hope is to pass them on to my children one day 😅. YES, it is possible—I still wear some blazers and couture pieces that my aunties rocked when they were in their 30s.
My tip: Pay attention to proper care and storage. It can make your favorite pieces last a lifetime and even become cherished heirlooms. Use padded hangers for delicate items and storing knitwear folded to prevent stretching, will also prolong the life of your garments. *For delicate fabrics, consider professional cleaning.
I hope you find this guide useful and you challenge yourself to star integrating these practices into your fashion choices, you will not only enhance your personal style but also will contribute to a more sustainable and ethical fashion industry.
